A Research Assistant position is available at the Environmental Sciences Initiative, Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) at the Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY). Located in New York City, the CUNY Graduate Center, is the focal point for advanced teaching and research at CUNY, the nation's largest urban public university. With doctoral and master's programs of the highest caliber, the Graduate Center fosters pioneering research and scholarship in the arts and sciences and prepares students for careers in universities and the private, nonprofit, and government sectors. The Graduate Center's commitment to research and scholarship for the public good is exemplified by its more than 30 centers, institutes, and initiatives, including its ASRC, a 200,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility in upper Manhattan, designed to promote collaboration among scientists in five areas of global research and innovation: nanoscience, photonics, structural biology, neuroscience, and environmental sciences. The incumbent will join Dr. Dianne Greenfield's laboratory group and report to Dr. Greenfield, a biological oceanographer who studies coastal ecosystem function, emphasizing water quality, harmful algal blooms (HABs), and nutrient biogeochemical cycling ().

Other Duties

The Research Assistant will assist in studies of algae primarily in the Tri-State area, including but not limited to harmful algal bloom (HABs) and coastal water quality. The individual will have a variety of responsibilities, including 1) performing field and laboratory sampling and analysis for phytoplankton, water quality (nutrients, pigments, algal toxins), and molecular parameters. This includes outdoor work under a range of weather conditions (heat, cold, mud, rain); 2) conducting daily laboratory operations (coordinating field sampling logistics, procurement, equipment quotes; 3) environmental equipment maintenance, (standard lab equipment, water quality sensors (deployable, autonomous, and hand-held), fluorometers, microscopes, molecular biology equipment); 4) helping to support student research; 5) maintaining the laboratory database and algal cultures; 6) assisting the PI in other research activities as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's degree in a scientific field relevant to the laboratory's work. Preferred experience includes at least 2+ years of relevant environmental work experience following a Bachelor's degree and/or a Master's degree with thesis research in a scientific field aligned with the laboratory's research activities. Relevant degree fields include laboratory and field-oriented scientific disciplines such as environmental sciences, biology, chemistry, ecology, oceanography, limnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, marine or aquatic biology/science. This is a full-time position that includes benefits. The initial appointment is available immediately and for 1 year. Continuation is contingent upon job performance, job reviews, and funding availability.
